In this workshop , Paul Oak will show you a range of techniques involved in the spoon carving process, from fresh log to finished spoon. This hands on class will show you everything you need to know to get started in spoon carving, with no previous woodworking experience necessary.

Using fresh wood and safe techniques, you will learn all you need to turn a bit of branch or log into a beautiful functional spoon using Swedish knives!

Topics include:

  • selecting the proper wood

  • splitting wood (demo only)

  • axing out a spoon blank from a billet (demo only)

  • common safe knife grips used in spoon carving

  • carving a spoon from a blank

  • how to use a hook knife

  • finishes and decorating spoons

  • Sharpening Demo

We'll focus on carving techniques that will allow you to carve safely with confidence so you can create at home too. Spoon carving is great because the tools required are small and transportable, so you don’t need a workshop or a workbench.  This workshop is designed to provide you with a strong foundation to create all sorts of carved objects.

Prerequisites: All skill levels are welcome, however, please note that this course requires hand strength, stamina, hand eye coordination and the ability to follow precise instructions with regards to safety. Being able to open a sealed jar is an example of basic hand strength. Ages 18 and up.

All tools and materials will be provided. There will be an hour lunch break.

Minimum of 3 students

Please sign the liability form when checking out.

I am offering one free spot for this class for those that may not be able to afford the tuition. Please send me an email at algomasloyd@gmail.com explaining why you would like to take this course and how this scholarship would help.
